4.02 Governing Body
The local chapter is governed by the president, vice president, secretary(ies), treasurer, historian, reporter, and parliamentarian with the guidance of the adviser. Each local chapter also has bylaws to use as a guide. Sample local chapter bylaws are found in Appendix M.
Some chapters have learned they function more effectively with an Executive Committee which meets periodically to make plans for chapter meetings and activities. The local Executive Committee can be composed of the officers and chairpersons of standing committees or the officers and a member representing each business, computer, and information technology curriculum, such as accounting, data processing, secretarial and general office. Refer to the National Chapter Management Handbook for the organizational structure of a chapter.
7.15 Change:
Students officers are the backbone of the chapter’s operations. Students serving as chapter officers affords them leadership opportunities. The following are usually the core elected chapter officers, but not all chapters may use these same titles.
- President
- Vice President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Reporter/Historian
- Parliamentarian
At a minimum, each chapter should have a president, a secretary, and possibly a treasurer — depending on local school system policies.
Additional officers may include:
- class representatives (possibly by grade level)
- social media managers/ambassadors or vice president of communications
- membership managers or vice president of membership/recruiting
- community service managers or vice president of community service
- competitive events manager
The chapter officers and the method of selection should be outlined in the chapter’s bylaws. It is important to follow the election procedures that are identified in the bylaws. A recommended process might include an application process with interviews, followed by an election achieved by a majority or plurality vote
